Hunter Gross is an American percussionist, chamber musician, and educator based in Jacksonville, Florida. His percussion education began at the age of 12 in Owasso, Oklahoma. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oklahoma (2016-20), where he studied with some of the top regional percussionists. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance under decorated percussionist, Dr. Andrea Venet, at the University of North Florida (2020-22). As a performer, Hunter has collaborated with several esteemed ensembles around the world including the American Modern Orchestra in New York (2019), at the Toolbox International Creative Academy in Hong Kong (2019), and most recently at the So Percussion Summer Institute where he rehearsed, performed, and recorded a plethora of new music virtually. Hunter has also received first prize in multiple competitions most recently in the Keyboard Division of the 2020 Percussive Arts Society (PAS) International Convention Solo Competition. He has also recently been published in Rhythm! Scene, the official blog of the Percussive Arts Society.
Hunter has collaborated with several composers over his career, most recently with Steve Snowden and Molly Joyce. These collaborations focus on the commissioning of music based on the coalescence of classical percussion techniques, fixed and live electronic accompaniment. His most recent commission for solo percussion and electronics, Dogtown from Steven Snowden, was funded through a consortium of 30-plus members. He will be premiering this piece at the National Conference for Percussion Pedagogy (NCPP) in Memphis, TN in May of 2022.
Hunter is an artist with the Heartland Marimba Ensemble and is involved with professional organizations including the Percussive Arts Society, the Roots and Rhizomes Mentorship Project, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education. He is also an active member and chair of the Webinar Committee for the PAS Student Committee.
